About the role

Analytics Engineer

About the role

payabl. is looking for an Analytics Engineer to join its Data Team and help turn raw platform data into reliable, well-structured datasets that can be used confidently across analytics and reporting.

This role sits between data engineering and data analytics. You will focus on data modelling, transformation, validation and quality, ensuring analysts and business teams can work with trusted datasets rather than raw source data.

You will collaborate closely with data engineers, analysts, domain leads and business stakeholders to translate business requirements into reusable models, metrics and reporting layers.

The role reports to the Team Lead Product Analyst.

What you’ll be doing

  • Design and maintain analytical data models using dbt.

  • Transform raw lakehouse data into validated bronze, silver and gold datasets.

  • Build reusable datasets for analytics, reporting and business decision-making.

  • Develop automated checks for data quality, consistency and completeness.

  • Implement validation and reconciliation processes across data pipelines.

  • Identify and resolve duplicate records, missing values and inconsistent data.

  • Work with data engineers and analysts to define reliable business logic.

  • Translate business requirements into structured models, metrics and dimensions.

  • Contribute to the organisation’s semantic layer.

  • Define consistent metrics used across dashboards and reporting.

  • Maintain clear documentation for datasets, models and business definitions.

  • Document data-quality issues, root causes and resolutions.

  • Help improve data lineage, discoverability and governance.

  • Provide analysts with clean, prepared datasets that reduce the need to work directly with raw source data.

  • Contribute to improvements in transformation workflows and orchestration.

  • Help automate recurring data-quality and validation processes.

  • Participate in code reviews and collaborative development workflows.

What we’re looking for

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.

  • Strong SQL skills.

  • Hands-on experience with data-transformation tools.

  • Practical experience using dbt is strongly preferred.

  • Strong Python skills.

  • Experience using pandas for data analysis and validation.

  • Experience designing, developing and maintaining ETL or ELT pipelines.

  • Familiarity with workflow-orchestration tools such as Apache Airflow.

  • Experience working with modern lakehouse or data-warehouse technologies.

  • Familiarity with platforms such as Apache Iceberg, Trino, Apache Druid, Snowflake or Amazon Redshift.

  • Experience implementing data-quality checks and automated tests.

  • Familiarity with tools such as dbt tests, Great Expectations or Soda.

  • Practical experience using Git for version control.

  • Familiarity with GitLab development workflows, including merge requests and code review.

  • Understanding of CI/CD principles for data projects.

  • Strong knowledge of data-modelling concepts.

  • Experience with dimensional modelling and star schemas.

  • Understanding of data-quality best practices.

  • Experience working across technical and business teams.

  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.

  • Excellent attention to detail.

  • A structured and analytical approach to problem-solving.

Skills that would be an advantage

  • Previous experience in a role combining analytics and data engineering.

  • Experience working with financial-services data.

  • Familiarity with online payments or banking datasets.

  • Experience with acquiring, reconciliation or clearing data.

  • Knowledge of reporting requirements within financial-services environments.

  • Familiarity with BI platforms such as Apache Superset.

  • Experience working with semantic layers.

  • Exposure to streaming or Change Data Capture technologies.

  • Familiarity with Apache Kafka.

  • Experience using Debezium.
