Senior Backend Engineer

About the role

payabl. is looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to join its engineering team and help build scalable, high-performance backend systems for internal and customer-facing products.

You will work on distributed services where reliability, throughput and system performance are critical. The role involves designing Python microservices, integrating external services, improving deployment workflows and solving complex production issues across cloud-based infrastructure.

You will also contribute to technical design decisions, code quality and engineering best practices while supporting other developers within the team.

The role reports to the Group CTO.

What you’ll be doing

• Design and develop scalable backend services using Python.

• Build and maintain microservices within a distributed architecture.

• Develop systems designed to operate reliably under high load.

• Improve backend performance, scalability and fault tolerance.

• Integrate third-party APIs and external services.

• Collaborate with product, engineering and infrastructure teams on technical solutions.

• Contribute to system design and architectural decisions.

• Build and deploy cloud-based services using AWS.

• Work with AWS services such as Lambda and supporting cloud infrastructure.

• Maintain and improve CI/CD pipelines.

• Collaborate with DevOps teams on deployment and release processes.

• Participate in and lead code reviews.

• Help maintain strong engineering and code-quality standards.

• Identify performance bottlenecks across backend systems.

• Drive improvements in system efficiency and scalability.

• Investigate and resolve complex production issues.

• Troubleshoot problems across distributed systems.

• Contribute to technical discussions and engineering standards.

• Share knowledge and support the development of other engineers.

What we’re looking for

• At least five years of professional backend-engineering experience.

• Strong professional experience developing backend systems with Python.

• Proven experience designing and scaling microservices.

• Strong knowledge of FastAPI or Django.

• Experience working with AWS.

• Practical knowledge of AWS Lambda or similar serverless technologies.

• Strong experience with Docker and containerised applications.

• Experience building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines.

• Familiarity with GitLab-based CI/CD workflows is preferred.

• Strong understanding of distributed systems.

• Experience working with high-load production environments.

• Experience designing systems for performance, scalability and reliability.

• Proven experience integrating third-party APIs.

• Strong debugging and production-troubleshooting skills.

• Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities.

• Strong communication skills.

• The ability to collaborate effectively within distributed or remote engineering teams.

• Previous experience in fintech, payments or financial platforms.

• Experience supporting high-throughput systems such as payment, trading or real-time processing platforms.

Skills that would be an advantage

• Experience working with event-driven architectures.

• Knowledge of Apache Kafka.

• Experience using other messaging or event-streaming systems.

• Experience with real-time data or transaction processing.

• Previous experience mentoring or supporting other software engineers.

• Experience designing cloud-native distributed systems.

• Familiarity with serverless architecture.

• Experience improving platform observability and production reliability.

Work arrangement

The role is available under the following arrangements:

• Cyprus – on-site employment arrangement.

• Poland – fully remote contractor arrangement.
