About the role
XM is looking for experienced Senior PHP Web Developers to join its Software Development team.
In this role, you will design new functionality, improve existing web applications and contribute to technical decisions that shape the company’s development processes.
You will work on customer-facing and internal platforms, including the company website, registration journeys, the Members Area and supporting web services. The wider engineering environment includes PHP, Go, React, Angular, Kubernetes, Terraform and AWS.
This position is suited to a backend-focused developer who enjoys taking ownership of projects, maintaining high engineering standards and working across the complete software-development lifecycle.
What you’ll be doing
Design and implement new web features and software projects.
Develop reliable, maintainable and secure PHP applications.
Maintain and improve existing customer-facing web platforms.
Refactor legacy or existing code to improve quality and maintainability.
Work on registration forms, account-management areas and internal web services.
Create and consume web services.
Research emerging web technologies and assess their value to the team.
Integrate suitable technologies into existing applications and workflows.
Write automated tests using PHPUnit.
Maintain strong test coverage across the applications you work on.
Support continuous-integration processes and engineering-quality standards.
Investigate and resolve support tickets related to your projects.
Diagnose application, database and integration issues.
Collaborate with other developers throughout project delivery.
Organise and prioritise development tasks independently.
Contribute to technical discussions and software-process improvements.
What we’re looking for
A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Information Technology or another relevant discipline.
At least three years of experience in PHP web development or a similar position.
Strong professional knowledge of PHP 8 or later.
Strong experience working with MySQL.
Practical experience using Redis.
Experience using Git and modern version-control workflows.
A strong understanding of object-oriented programming principles.
Experience developing with modern PHP frameworks.
Experience creating and consuming web services.
Practical experience writing automated tests with PHPUnit.
The ability to research and adopt technologies that provide clear value.
Strong organisational and prioritisation skills.
Good analytical and problem-solving abilities.
The ability to work independently and take ownership of assigned projects.
The ability to collaborate effectively within a software-development team.
A commitment to maintainable code and high engineering standards.
Skills that would be an advantage
Experience developing applications with Symfony.
Experience designing and developing REST APIs.
Knowledge of common software-design patterns.
Understanding of SOLID principles.
Familiarity with the DRY principle and reusable software design.
Knowledge of web-application security and OWASP guidance.
Experience working with AWS or another cloud provider.
Experience analysing and optimising database queries.
Experience building and maintaining Composer packages.
Familiarity with Kubernetes and Terraform.
Exposure to Go, React or Angular within multidisciplinary engineering teams.

This is a full-time position with hybrid and remote working options listed by the employer.
