About the role

Senior IP Counsel

JetBrains seeks an experienced intellectual property and data protection lawyer to join its in-house legal team. This senior role combines expertise in intellectual property law, privacy compliance, technology transactions, and regulatory risk management. The successful candidate will serve as a strategic legal advisor protecting the company's intellectual assets while supporting innovation and growth across multiple jurisdictions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Advise on all aspects of intellectual property including copyrights, trademarks, patents, trade secrets, licensing, and brand protection

  • Develop and maintain the group's global IP strategy aligned with business objectives

  • Draft, review, and negotiate IP-related agreements including licensing, SaaS, technology transfer, NDAs, development agreements, and open-source compliance documentation

  • Conduct IP due diligence for strategic partnerships, investments, acquisitions, and commercial transactions

  • Lead the company's privacy and data protection compliance program, including GDPR, UK GDPR, CCPA/CPRA, and other global privacy frameworks

  • Support data processing agreements, standard contractual clauses, and vendor privacy assessments

  • Conduct data protection impact assessments and legitimate interest assessments

  • Advise on privacy-by-design principles for products and commercial initiatives

  • Monitor regulatory developments and provide implementation guidance

  • Support complex commercial and technology transactions with internal and external stakeholders

Requirements

  • Qualified solicitor in England and Wales or equivalent European jurisdiction

  • 8-12 years post-qualification experience in IP, technology, and data protection law

  • Strong experience advising software, SaaS, or digital product businesses

  • Solid knowledge of UK and EU IP law and GDPR frameworks

  • Proven experience negotiating complex commercial technology agreements

  • Excellent drafting, negotiation, and stakeholder management skills

  • Fluent English communication

  • Preferred: experience with AI, cloud computing, open-source software, platform businesses, emerging technology regulations, and supporting technology startups
