About the role

XM is expanding its Software Development team and is hiring several experienced Senior Java Developers.

In this role, you will help build the next generation of the company’s trading applications. You will design and improve reliable, scalable and high-performance backend systems while contributing to architecture, technical standards and long-term platform improvements.

You will work within a cross-functional engineering environment, collaborating with developers, product managers and programme managers to deliver high-quality product features. The role also includes mentoring less-experienced engineers, reviewing code and helping the wider team solve complex technical challenges.

What you’ll be doing

• Design, develop and maintain advanced backend applications using Java.

• Build resilient, scalable and efficient services for trading-related platforms.

• Contribute to system architecture and technical-design decisions.

• Help define structures that improve system reliability, performance and scalability.

• Follow test-driven development, continuous integration and agile practices.

• Write clean, maintainable and well-tested production code.

• Perform unit testing and automated testing.

• Review code and help maintain high engineering standards.

• Mentor junior and mid-level developers.

• Monitor system performance and investigate technical issues.

• Troubleshoot production problems and implement appropriate fixes.

• Benchmark applications and identify opportunities for optimisation.

• Collaborate with product and programme managers to deliver features on schedule.

• Contribute ideas that improve existing systems, products and engineering processes.

• Evaluate emerging technologies and assess their potential value to the platform.

• Share technical knowledge and support continuous improvement within the team.

What we’re looking for

• A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering or another relevant discipline.

• At least five years of professional Java-development experience.

• Strong experience building backend applications.

• A solid understanding of the complete software-development lifecycle.

• Strong knowledge of programming best practices and software-design patterns.

• A good understanding of algorithms, data structures and algorithmic complexity.

• Knowledge of concurrency and multithreading concepts.

• Experience designing or implementing REST APIs and web services.

• A deep understanding of object-oriented design.

• Experience developing applications within cloud-based environments.

• Experience working as part of a cross-functional product team.

• The ability to collaborate with product and programme managers.

• Experience delivering reliable features within agreed timelines.

• An interest in application benchmarking and performance optimisation.

• Strong analytical and technical problem-solving skills.

• A collaborative approach to software development.

• A commitment to continuous learning and professional development.

• A strong interest in backend systems and modern engineering practices.
